While running errands today, I was listening to a New Years’ Compilation a friend, Patrick, sent us as a holiday gift (I swear I have a stack of gifts here I’ve been too much of a loser to actually ship out). One of the songs in there (I don’t even remember which) was a sort of slow, introspective thing. So, when I got home, that’s the mood I was in. Scrolling through my iTunes library, I double-clicked the first thing that seemed to hold the mood for me, an Alison Moyet track (yes, I was too lazy to scroll past the As). Now, if you don’t know, iTunes now has this “genius” feature, which picks songs, based on your current track, that somehow magically relate and have the same feel (I hide the sidebar that tries to sell me more, as I hate things of the sort). So, for probably only the second or third time ever, I clicked that button. Below are the results…

In an attempt to keep myself on track with writing things for this blog, I’ll try a new feature column. For years (yes, literally, years), I’ve been telling people who complain of Apple’s DRM embedded in iTunes Store music, and berate the company for it, that their rants are misplaced. They need to be instead focusing their energies on the “Music” Corporations who license the songs, and that Apple’s use of FairPlay DRM, though annoying, was a forced product of their negotiations with the megalomaniacal and idiotic companies who try to control what you listen to in every way. Apple was the first company to make this breakthrough of a major online music download store, really, and has paved the way for many other models, and perhaps a DRM-free future of such things.
