The Last Thing I Wrote …

Posted by Danny on 20th November 2009

A repost from FaceBook…

As many of you know (and hear me say far too much), I stopped “seriously” writing long ago. This was for many reasons, not least of which was the fact that I tended to employ the hammer-to-the-head approach. No subtlety involved. I still tend to have this effect with my artwork, sadly, but am learning.
The only reason I mention this is that, just tonight, I rediscovered one of the last things I wrote that wasn’t merely a journal entry or for a mindless comic story. This was done, oh, 13 or so years ago, when I lived in Manhattan. I was walking a huge stack of boxes of CDs (we had our record label at the time) through the city streets, headed to the closest UPS center, to send to distributors and reviewers, and these lines came into my head. The 2-mile or so walk took me about an hour (a couple hundred pounds of bulky cartons and city streets will do that), and in that time, I formulated these words, writing them down as faithfully as my memory would allow when I got home.
A few years later, when Tommy and I were bored one night, we played around with setting these words to music, ala beatnik club/ William Shatner style, with a big band sound behind (We called it “Anti-Apocalyptic Ragtime CafĂ©”). I no longer have the original scratchings, so am transposing this from the rough recording itself.
If you’re sad enough to steal these lyrics for your own, then you really need to re-evaluate your life. As they’re pretty over-the-top, and if you can’t do better then you likely need to quit. But they amused me tonight, so I’ll share. I’m only posting for personal historic amusement, so don’t expect much!
